Costa Rica has always been a peaceful and democratic country. It' been called "the Switzerland of Central America", a country of prosperity and tranquility. Land of one thousand and one wealth, mountains, rivers, rain forests, lush vegetation, colorful butterflies, Costa Rica fascinates by all its diversity. With first-rate tourist facilities, the country is also a paradise for families looking for an exotic holiday.

WHAT TO DO :

This Caribbean region is characterized by its variety of aquatic ecosystems and its fabulous beaches of black and white sand, ideal for sport fishing and diving, as well as for sunbathing and beachcombing. The Pacific Coast has a lot of tourist resorts for which beaches are selected for its great surfing such as Esterillos, Jacó, Hermosa, Boca Barranca, near the Marine National Park Ballena and in Golfito where the famous "longest left wave" takes shape. Tamarindo, white sand beaches, mangroves, sea birds, iguanas make it a paradise for those who want to live in harmony with nature, Tamarindo is THE perfect beach to learn to surf, while Playa del Coco is ideal for advanced surfers and even more popular for its animated nightlife. Playa Panama, is a white sand beach, lapped by calm waters, Playa Flamingo, ideal for those who love the mixture of class hotels in quiet atmosphere. The Ocotal and Hermosa beaches are among the most popular on the coast of Guanacaste. Further south, one can find Playa Grande, with the National Park Las Baulas, where leatherback turtles come and lay their eggs every year at the same time. Many other beaches along the coast, complement this natural offer such as Playa Carrillo, Playa Ostional, Manzanillo or Coyote. These destinations make up the landscape along the coast of Guanacaste; Costa Rica's largest province made up of dense rainforest, where tumbling waterfalls and rushing rivers fill the landscape of Barulio Carrillo National Park, some of which are used for the practice of adventure sports.

WHAT TO SEE:

The list of parks is long and we cannot see them all in one trip. Some are particularly outstanding: like the reserve of the Monteverde rainforest and so are all these other National Parks: Tortuguero, Manuel Antonio and Corcovado. The Santa Rosa National Park located in the northern part of the province, is a dry tropical forest with an extraordinary biological diversity. All volcanoes of Costa Rica are in designated national parks and always attract visitors. The Irazu volcano is stunning with its green water crater. You can also follow a path that has been established around the Turrialba volcano. The active Arenal volcano erupts about 40 times a day and the best time to visit this site is in the evening, when you can see the lava flows.

THINGS TO DO:

The farming of coffee, banana and plantain are also the three main exports. The Costa Rican coffee has a worldwide popularity with its seven varieties grown in the country. The fermented sugar cane is used to produce the national alcoholic drink called Guaro. It is similar to vodka and is usually taken with water and lemon. The most popular beer of the country are Pilsen and Imperial. The native of Costa Rica are called tico (man) or tica (woman). This comes from the popular use of the diminutive suffix tico added to several words in order to appear more courteous and polite. Costa Ricans are known to be very friendly, helpful, relaxed, in no hurry, educated and sensitive to the environment. The common expression Pura Vida (pure life) meaning "that's life" really describes their lifestyle. The Guanacaste harbors typical dishes and delicious food, offering thus, the opportunity to taste the real Costa Rican culinary traditions.

ELECTRICITY:

Voltage: 120 | Frequency: 60 | the perfect solution: Do bring an adapter strip.

CURRENCY:

An airport tax of 29$ USD per person, including babies, must be paid when exiting the country, either in cash or by credit card. The currency is the Costa Rican colón (CRC). To avoid complications, we would suggest to carry US dollars or Colones. For the exchange rate: http://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/exchange/ It is recommended to exchange your money in banks or authorized exchange offices. The banks are easy to find. You can withdraw cash in the ATMs of major cities, but in local currency only. ATMs are found in most places, especially in San Jose, that provide US dollars and Colones. US dollars Travelers checks can be exchanged at banks or hotels. All major credit cards are accepted in major tourist resorts but rarely in the more rural areas. It is recommended to carry US dollars in small bills since the tourist regions have prices in US dollars. The only thing you should buy in large quantities is the Costa Rican coffee.

TIPPING:

Government tax of 13% is charged on all goods and services. Hotels charge a tax of 16.3 %. The restaurants charge a 13 % tax and add a 10% tip. Tipping is customary for room boys, porters and guides. The taxi drivers do not receive any tip.
