Cayo-Coco / Cayo Guillermo

Cayo-Coco / Cayo Guillermo in video: Hotel Tryp Cayo coco beach,Cuba January 2013

Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco (named after the White Ibis, known here as the coco) were immortalized by Ernest Hemingway in Islands in the Stream. The off shore islands and keys (cayos) of Jardines del Rey are indeed some sort of royal treasure for tourists; covered with palm trees, mangroves, wild bush and white sandy beaches. Cayo Coco is a 22 km long stretch of tropical shore line and spectacular beaches. The beaches of La Jaula, Las Coloradas and Los Flamencos are considered to be the best in the keys. The five kilometer-long stretch of white sand beaches of Cayo Gulllermo patiently await visitors who want to become one with nature. One can choose to lie lazily under a royal palm tree or sunbathe, while others will want to go snorkelling or swimming in turquoise waters.

WHAT TO DO:

The islands rise from Cuba's Northern coral reef and as such, they offer a wide variety of snorkelling and scuba diving expeditions. The keys are also the perfect setting for nautical sports such as sailing, windsurfing and other boating activities. As for land based tours, Jeep safari operators will pick you up directly at your hotel to take you to Lake Redonda, where a short boat trip will take you to a crocodile farm, then up Cunagua Hill and end on a trail, on horseback. At night, most hotels have bars and dance clubs for those who want to stretch the fun into late at night.

WHAT TO SEE :

Buenavista biosphere reserve Most of the islands are part of this wildlife reserve where mangoves, everglades, pink flamingos and Roseate Spoonbill can be observed in their natural habitat. More than 200 species of birds live here. History buffs will marvel at the Moron Museum and at the one kilometer-long remains of the Jucaro-Moron trail, an elaborate defensive system built by the Spanish in the 19th century, now a recognized UNESCO World Heritage landmark.

THINGS TO DO :

Visitors should note that besides tourism, the province of Ciego de Avila is renowned for its prolific agricultural industry. Its rich soil and numerous waterways help the area bring in more than its share of bananas, pineapples and citrus fruits. Listen and feel the ambient culture and traditions handed down by generations of settlers from Spain, Jamaica or Haiti.

ELECTRICITY:

110 V., 60Hz. American outlets. Some hotels have 220 V. outlets.

MONEY:

*Please note that CUCs do not have any value outside of Cuba, so we recommend that you change small amounts depending on your needs. The exit tax (25 CUC of Cuba) must be paid in local currency and in cash only, upon leaving.* Please bring Canadian money to change into local currency (Convertable Cuban Pesos or CUC) once in destination. There are no cash machines available on the island. In terms of credit card use, please refer to your issuing bank, also please note that credit cards issued by an American Bank will not be accepted in Cuba. The Tourist Card is handed out on the flight to Cuba and the cost of this tourist card is included in the price of your vacation package, so no extra costs to add.

TIPPING:

Local tourist industry workers largely depend on tips to get by. Giving a dollar to tour guides, hotel security guards, bus drivers and the thoughtful restaurant personnel is highly appreciated. In fact, any one you encounter that goes out of their way to make your stay more enjoyable deserves a tip. Tipping can lead to that special advice or extra help when needed.
