Cayo Santa Maria

Few destinations offer travelers the opportunity to experience an historical city , while also staying in recent, comfortable hotels on white sand beaches. Cayo Santa Maria does all this. Connected by a panoramic sea route to the mainland, this island, north of Cuba opened to tourism less than 10 years ago. You will be staying in modern hotels which are located less than 90 minutes from a great historical and cultural center.

WHAT TO DO:

Cayo Santa Maria is several kilometers of beach in a heavenly environment. The sand is white and soft, and a recent Cuban law ensures that the resorts are built at a reasonable distance from the shore. This results in a quiet and natural environment where one can relax. The coral in the region makes diving very attractive, along with an abundant flora and interesting marine life. Most of the hotels on the island offer water activities such as sailing or windsurfing.

WHAT TO SEE:

Once fully relaxed, you will have the chance to visit Santa Clara, an exceptional city from a cultural point of view. It is in this city that you will find the Ernesto Che Guevara Museum that commemorates the commitment of the Cuban revolutionary forces to overthrow the Batista regime. Parque Vidal will amaze you with its urban activities, street vendors and buildings with colonial architecture. Furthermore, the architecture of the cathedral of Santa Clara is every year a significant tourist attraction.

THINGS TO DO:

Santa Clara enjoys a serene, laid back atmosphere where guests are invited to discover and experience the very warm Cuban culture. Locals will be thrilled to share their way of life with you.

ELECTRICITY:

110V, 60Hz US standard plugs. Hotels sometimes have the 220 V.

MONEY:

The currency in Cuba is the Cuban convertible Peso. *Please note that CUCs do not have any value outside of Cuba, so we recommend that you change small amounts depending on your needs. Bring canadian money to change into local currency (Convertable Cuban Pesos or CUC) once at destination. There are no cash machines available on the island. In terms of credit card use, please refer to your issuing bank, also please note that credit cards issued by an American bank will not be accepted in Cuba. The tourist card is handed out on the flight to Cuba and the cost (25 CUC of Cuba) is now INCLUDED in your package.

TIPPING:

Cuban workers rely on tips from tourists to survive. People who deserve $1 include tour guides, hotel guards, bus drivers, attentive restaurant staff or anyone in the tourism sector which goes beyond the call of duty. Tipping can open doors or arrange situations. With the circulation of two currencies in Cuba, gratuities in hard currency (CUC) are appreciated by all personnel in Cuba. Tips received in convertible Cuban pesos will grant the recipient access to a much larger variety of goods and services.
