Trinidad

Trinidad, surely is one of Cuba's most outstanding travel destination. Here is where history, culture, folklore, architecture, beaches and a wildly exuberant nature culminate into one fascinating region. An interesting blend of resorts, hotels and activities truly make Trinidad and its area, most pleasant and welcoming. Accommodations are quite comparable to most large hotels in the world. However here, large open area lobbies and dining rooms are filled with the scents of tropical flowers and the pure, warm Caribbean breeze. Cuba's most authentic city and its surroundings will dazzle you by day…and all the way through the night.

TEMPERATURE:

Trinidad enjoys tropical, warm weather but remains comfortable as a local micro-climate brings a refreshing night time breeze that cools down the hot air, making it perfect for an evening out, enjoying the best Cuba has to offer. Average temperature ranges from 23 to 30 degrees C.

WHAT TO DO:

Attention all divers! The area is literally surrounded by over 30 different dive sites, where, in relatively shallow waters, one will encounter many different species of fish, sea turtles, feather-like gorgonians, black coral, chelonians and shell fish. Dive in caves and discover why they are the starting point of many local legends, such as « The fabulous and its waters of eternal youth » or one of many others, where stalagmites and stalactites abound. In particular, one will want to visit the cave near the Maria Aguilar beach and the one in the San Luis Valley, also known as the Valle de Los Ingenios. Enjoy a memorable visit to Topes de Collantes, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO host to spectacular water falls, great hiking tours, horseback riding, hot springs and incredibly lush landscape. The region now sees its restaurant offering practically double in size every year since the Cuban government has authorized small, private businesses. Whether in its more regular form or in local homes, restaurants vary in sizes and style but the menu, generally remains quite similar from one place to another. The lobster is generally a great choice!

WHAT TO SEE:

Since Santiago is generally recognized as Cuba's museum city, Unesco declared it and neighbouring Valle de Los Ingenios, World Heritage sites in 1988. A visit in this magnificent nearby valley is a must, where one can visit the ruins of an old sugar plantation built by resourceful early settlers or marvel at the Torre Iznaga, towering at 42 meters and still standing as the city's protecting sentinel. Other must see sites in Trinidad are: - Plaza Mayor - The Romantic Museum - The Colonial Architecture Museum - The Caza Ortiz and Art Gallery - Palacio Cantero - The watchtower of Mirador de la Vigía

THINGS TO DO:

Upon their return from Cuba, most travellers will name Trinidad as the most beautiful city they've encountered on the island. What strikes visitors the most is the quietness; mixed with a laid-back, warm atmosphere that leads you to believe you have stepped back somewhere to another time, when time stood still. While walking down lazily along the cobbled stone streets, visitors find themselves engulfed in a surreal trip back half a century ago. Downtown, every street corner reveals one architectural treasure after another. We strongly recommend a morning stroll in the brisk fresh air or later in the evening, when things wind down and life is easy. For the longest time Trinidad was somewhat separated from the rest of the island, squeezed between the Caribbean to the south and the mountains to the north. It is only in 1952 that the first paved road opened up the Valle de Los Ingenios and its area to the rest of the island. Today, Trinidad is a must see for tourists who want to experience real Cuban life and atmosphere, while marvelling at the genuine architectural treasures form a lush, rich past.

ELECTRICITY:

110 V.; 60Hz.With American outlets. However, some hotels have 220 V.

MONEY:

*Please note that CUCs do not have any value outside of Cuba, so we recommend that you change small amounts depending on your needs. Please bring Canadian money to change into local currency (Convertable Cuban Pesos or CUC) once in destination. There are no cash machines available on the island. In terms of credit card use, please refer to your issuing bank, also please note that credit cards issued by an American Bank will not be accepted in Cuba. The Tourist Card is handed out on the flight to Cuba and the cost of this tourist card is included in the price of your vacation package, so no extra costs to add.

TIPPING:

Local tourist industry workers largely depend on tips to get by. Giving a dollar to tour guides, hotel security guards, bus drivers and the thoughtful restaurant personnel is highly appreciated. In fact any one you encounter that goes out of their way to make your stay more enjoyable deserves a tip. Tipping can lead to that special advice or extra help when needed.
