WHAT TO DO:

For the amateur of old stones, the Colonial Zone are undoubtedly the most fascinating tour of the country. The walk through these streets is enjoyable as it is easy to move around and the most impressive buildings are located in a relatively small area. Along the Calle Las Damas, a splendid little street which dates back to the early days of the city, are aligned some of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the old town. With cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages, a walk in Santo Domingo is a return to the past. On the Malecón, tourists can visit historical monuments and museums. The Los Tres Ojos National Park at the Mirador del Este is located at the entrance of Santo Domingo, on the eastern bank of the Ozama River, and has some nice trails. But the highlight of this visit is not visible at first. To find out, you will have to make your way down a stone staircase leading underground, at the bottom of an open cave. Upon entering there, you will first be surprised by the wonderful tropical vegetation and the humidity that prevails. Then, expect to follow a narrow path that will take you well below the earth's surface to the edge of surprising, but very beautiful underground lakes, three in total, which are at the origin of the name of the park: "The three eyes". You can also observe various natural formations, including stalactites. After your visit underground, you can follow a trail to a fourth lake, whose shape is reminiscent of a volcano crater.

WHAT TO SEE:

The old colonial town is very pleasant: surrounded by its old walls, it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. On several historic streets you will discover beautiful houses, monasteries and many churches. The new city is not to be outdone. The shopping is great and the various museums should delight you. With its cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages, a walk in Santo Domingo is a return to the past. At the Zona Colonial, visitors will see one of the many old churches and the oldest European fortresses. At the Malecón, visitors can visit historical monuments and museums.

THINGS TO DO:

Santo Domingo is the city of escapism and entertainment, but also the heart of the Dominican culture. The cobblestone streets and centuries-old frontage of colonial houses set the stage for quaint cafes, restaurants and small boutique hotels where reigns a warm tropical atmosphere and the entertainment lasts long through the night. Considered as the world capital of merengue, Santo Domingo is the ideal place to listen, watch or dance the merengue! Regardless of where you find yourself, you will always hear this most popular style of music: in stores, bars, restaurants, hotels, etc. It is also the national dance. Santo Domingo is also known for its shops selling jewelry and many types of objects made of amber and larimar. Santo Domingo comes alive when the sun goes down; the entertainment options are endless. The city offers everything from quiet bars to rhythmic clubs open well into the wee hours. For a unique experience, it is worth making a stop at a colmados where small daytime shops turn into bars at night…cold cervezas are served and traditional Latin music is played. The city also has many casinos where the fun never stops. Baseball is a major sport for Dominicans and if you are in Santo Domingo during the season, do try to catch a game!

ELECTRICITY:

In the Dominican Republic, electrical outlets are 110 volts like the United States and Canada.

CURRENCY:

The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican peso (RD$). You can find the exchange rate at: http://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/exchange/ Most credit cards and travellers checks are widely accepted in most of the country's sites and attractions. There are ATM machines in almost every city in the Dominican Republic as well as in most resorts. A departure tax of approximately $20 USD per person, is payable at the airport, it is not included in your ticket.

TIPPING:

A 16% tax is added to all goods and an additional 10 % on all services. Tipping is recommended for janitors, doormen, baggage handlers, tour guides, taxis and bathroom attendants. Also, a 10% rule applies to restaurants if the service is good.
