Jamaica

Jamaica is a tropical island characterized by lush green vegetation, spectacular waterfalls and dazzling white sand beaches. It offers travellers a wide array of excellent tourist facilities and outstanding landscape. The main Jamaican resorts are: Montego Bay (with Negril, north-east);the north coast with (Falmouth, Ocho Rios and Port Antonio); Kingston and the South (with Mandeville and Spanish Town)

TEMPERATURE:

Jamaica has a tropical maritime climate.

WHAT TO DO:

There are many quiet places to explore: the Blue Mountain peak can challenge experienced hikers. MONTEGO BAY is a water sports paradise. Long Bay is a world renowned surf spot, but also a spectacular pink sand beach with crystal clear turquoise water. OCHO RIOS, once a quiet fishing village still kept its charm although there now plenty of resorts, hotels and restaurants where the food offering is diverse and excellent.COCKPIT COUNTRY is a pierced limestone ridge made of thousands of cones shaped hammocks, surrounded by steep precipices. It is by helicopter that one can best appreciate the majestic beauty and depth of this site - (there are no roads that lead there...). The region is home to abundant wildlife. It is a birdwatcher's paradise while caves and nature explorers will be thrilled. Most paths are ancient slave trails and still needs to be cleared with machetes. The rocks are razor sharp and vegetation often covers underlying cavities and can crumble under your feet. It is better to be in great shape and never venture there alone.

WHAT TO SEE:

Ocho Rios essentially welcomes cruise ships but also presents a succession of bays and beaches; the most famous are Runaway Bay and Discovery Bay. Falmouth is a delightful harbor, ideal for a restful holiday situated 42km east of Montego Bay. From here you can visit rafter village on Martha Brae river and also a fascinating crocodile farm named Jamaica Swamp Safaris. There is also a plantation house,Greenwood Great House. Other main attractions of this green island will be NEGRIL for the beauty of its beaches and KINGSTON, for the Bob Marley Museum, the Historic center, the Craft market and of course the bustling streets.

THINGS TO DO:

Poor and populous, Jamaica is not less an idyllic destination, because of its near perfect climate, but also because of its landscape and culture with music being the soundtrack to everyday life characterized by African flavors, marked by slavery. Jamaican cuisine combines many ethnic traditions, all delectable. Montego Bay (or Mo'Bay, most frequently used) impresses with its typical Jamaican atmosphere, bustling harbor, nightlife, beaches, golf courses, its varied craft markets and various water sports. Jamaicans drive on the LEFT SIDE of the street, therefore, be careful and be aware that some car rental agencies ask for international driving license; you must be 25 years old and have a valid credit card.

ELECTRICITY:

110 or 220 V. Adapters are recommended and are easy to find at several retailers. American type outlets (2 pin plugs) or English (3 pin plugs) are in use in Jamaica.

CURRENCY:

The official currency is the Jamaican dollar (JMD). To know the exchange rate: http://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/exchange/ The US dollar is widely accepted. Credit cards (Mastercard, Visa and American Express) and traveler's checks are accepted everywhere on the island in hotels, restaurants and most shops. ATMs are not always reliable; few are linked to international networks. Duty-free shops offer crystal, leather goods, perfumes and gold jewelry. The best Jamaican products are carved wood and batik fabrics. The best prices for Blue Mountain coffee and High Mountain rum can be found in supermarkets. Looking for souvenirs to your relatives? Rum and Rasta music are obviously unavoidable! A general consumption tax (GCT) of 17.5% is applied to goods and services. You also have a 15% tax on hotel services, restaurants and most shopping stores. Travelers need to pay a $20USD DEPARTURE TAX at Montego Bay and Kingston airports (not for domestic flights). This tax needs to be paid in CASH only.

TIPPINGS:

For restaurants, taxis, doormen, the service is rarely included in the price, so it is advisable to add 15% tipping.
