Los Cabos

Separated by thirty kilometers and a beautiful beach (eroded by the constant addition of new hotels ), San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas are commonly defined as Los Cabos "capes" and nicknamed "the end of the world", since they are located at the tip of Baja California, a vast territory shared between Mexico and the United States. It is because of its proximity to the country that the lifestyle of Los Cabos is so Americanized, especially with regard to urban services and shopping centers. It is here that the Sea of Cortez (or Gulf of California) and mountains meet, which gives it its charm. However the towns of Baja California are not particularly rich in art and culture. The sole genuine cultural point of interest lies in old cave paintings of 5000 years of the Sierra and you can only get there by donkey!

WHAT TO DO:

Whale watching in the Sea of Cortez and in Baja California (around Gerrero Negro), is one of the most powerful experiences that one can live and is considered to be the main attraction of the winter period. The gray whales come to mate and give birth to their babies, between January and April, before returning north. You can see them frolic from Cabo San Lucas, but the best three observation points are: Laguna Ojo de Liebre Bay, San Ignacio Bay and Puerto Lopez Mateos (Magdalena Bay). The underwater will absolutely satisfy divers and big game fishermen! You can also rent a car to explore the area, some villages in the mountains and deserted bays are worth visiting.

WHAT TO SEE:

The peaceful San Jose del Cabo retains the appearance and atmosphere of an authentic Mexican village with cobbled streets, nice restaurants and shops that make its charm. However, the vibrant Cabo San Lucas, at the other end of the "Corridor", is the perfect place to party, with its many lively bars and shopping centers near the glamorous marina. Discover the most bohemian and cultural side of the Baja California, very different from San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas known also for their excellent beaches living at a furious pace and attracting lots of tourists. Along the "Corridor" linking the two towns, you will be surprised by the luxury hotels, spas and the impressive gigantic golf courses that have made Los Cabos reputation. On this road you will find the best beaches in the area (and among the best in the world) for water sports.

MORE THINGS TO DO:

These two resorts are very different. San José del Cabo is more typical, with its colonial center, its small market under the "portals" with its small, friendly and inexpensive hotels, located opposite to the waterfront. Cabo San Lucas is more Americanized and more expensive, with its marina and luxury hotels. Playa Medano, the nearest of Cabo San Lucas is undoubtedly at the heart of the festival which makes visitors vibrate. Bars, night clubs and sophisticated restaurants give it a glamorous and unlimited festive atmosphere that is the essence of Cabo San Lucas. Taste congelada of Jamaica, a kind of hibiscus sorbet, or enjoy an iced Margarita in a restaurant of the area and let you wrap by both sides of Los Cabos. The adventure is just beginning!

ELECTRICITY:

Electrical power in Mexico is based in 110 volts and 60 cycles.

CURRENCY:

Pesos are used throughout Mexico.
For the exchange rate: http://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/exchange/

There are ATMs everywhere. The most common credit cards are MasterCard, Visa and American Express; as soon as you have a credit card, you will be asked the question: "Debit or credit " ?. If you do not have an account in the United States, the answer is "Credit" and this is the easiest way to pay. Moreover, the operation is done at a better rate than if you bought dollars at a bank or exchange offices. However, for every purchase, a small percentage (about 1 to 2%) will be charged by your bank. Prices shown are always without tax. It will be added once you pay, and varies by state, city and by the type of purchase.

TIPPING:

The tip is an institution from which you cannot escape (except in fast food and self-service where you can leave only $1 or $2). To know what to give: just double the amount of the tax, which ends up being about 15-17%. In bars, it is expected that you leave a $ 1 tip per beer, for instance. In taxis, about 10 to 15 % should be added to the amount on the meter.
