Office de la protection du consommateur (Consumer's Bureau) - August 22, 2020

My trip has been cancelled and I am being offered a credit towards a future trip. If I accept it, will it be considered a form of refund?

Discussions are currently underway with various stakeholders on the whole issue of travel credits. The Office hopes to provide an update in the near future. Please check this web page regularly to stay informed.

Certainly, it is not illegal for tourism service providers to offer various solutions to customers whose trips have been cancelled. It may be advantageous to accept this proposal if it is convenient for you, particularly because it ensures quick compensation while minimizing your efforts. However, you may be tempted to refuse when the credit has restrictive conditions, such as an expiry date or penalty.

My trip is scheduled to take place in several weeks or months. Can I cancel it immediately and still be covered by the FICAV (Compensation Fund for Customers of Quebec Travel Agents)?

The situation is changing from day to day and will likely continue to change for some time. If you choose to cancel your trip now, and the warning is still in effect 72 hours or less before your scheduled departure date, you may be reimbursed by the Fund. For example, you could claim the amount you had to pay as compensation for cancelling your trip. However, if the warning is no longer in effect 72 hours prior to your scheduled departure date, you will not be eligible for a refund from the Fund.

Public Notice - August 22, 2020

Here are a few:

  • Wash your hands frequently;

  • Avoid public places with large crowds;

  • If you think you have symptoms, you should self-quarantine. If symptoms worsen, call 1-833-784-4397 or your provincial Covid-19 hotline promptly.

    We remind you that under Canadian law, until further notice, you must observe a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon your return home when traveling outside the country.

    As per Government of Canada guidelines, a comprehensive official travel advisory is in effect: Avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada until further notice.

C) if 3 days prior to your scheduled departure, the government recommends avoiding non-essential travel to your destination and the travel credit is not a valid choice for you, you may request a refund from FICAV (Compensation Fund for Customers of Quebec Travel Agents). https://www.opc.gouv.qc.ca/consommateur/bien-service/voyage/fonds-indemnisation/covid-19/ (page not available in English).

Transat relaxes its COVID-19 travel credit policy

Transat relaxes its COVID-19 travel credit policy

Credits for future travel are now transferable and have no expiry date.

In order to offer more flexibility to customers whose reservations have been cancelled due to COVID-19 or to those who have availed themselves of the flexibility policy, Transat is relaxing the conditions for redeeming its travel credits.

As a result, any credit for future travel granted as a result of the pandemic will now be fully transferable and will not have an expiry date. As before, any residual value is kept on file. This new flexible policy applies to flight, package or tour bookings. However, it does not apply to credits received for cruise files, which are subject to the cruise line's specific conditions.

Change in validity

Travel credits no longer have an expiry date. This new policy therefore applies to travel credits issued for :

  • Passengers whose reservations have been cancelled by Air Transat/Transat (the previous validity period for these credits was 24 months);
  • Passengers who booked before March 4, 2020 and who cancelled their reservation using Transat's flexibility policy (the previous validity period for these credits was 24 months);
  • Passengers who booked on or after March 4, 2020 and who cancelled their reservation using Transat's Flexibility Policy Book With Peace of Mind (the previous validity period for these credits was 12 months).

This new policy is in effect for all files already cancelled; there is no need to call us to take advantage of it. Also, a Cheaper Vacations travel agent will be able to download a new version of the travel credit voucher with no expiry date for you. This change may take a few days. Thank you for your patience.

Update - Air Canada Vacations Policy - August 27, 2020

Update on COVID-19: Booking cancellation

As announced, Air Canada has reduced the capacity of its flight network while continuing to serve a number of international and transborder destinations from selected Canadian cities. Please see the COVID-19 status page on aircanada.com for the most recent flight schedule.

Scheduled departures between May 1 and August 31, 2020, inclusively:

If Air Canada no longer serves your destination, your reservation will be automatically cancelled and you will be notified of the cancellation by email.

If Air Canada is still serving your destination, but flights are cancelled on the day of the week you are scheduled to depart, your reservation will be automatically cancelled and you will be notified of the cancellation by email.

If Air Canada is still serving your destination on the day of the week you are scheduled to depart between July 1 and August 31, 2020, you will still be scheduled to depart on vacation. Given the current situation, we have a goodwill policy in place to support you. If you wish to cancel your reservation, you can call one of our Cheaper Vacations travel agent at 1 844 727-2437 to receive a credit for a future trip with no expiry date. Please note that according to Air Canada Vacations' terms and conditions, vacation cancellations must be made 20 days or more prior to departure.

If your trip has been cancelled:

Affected customers whose reservations have been cancelled will automatically receive full credit for future travel with no expiry date. Conditions may apply for certain hotel chains and cruise lines.

As these credits will be automatically processed and sent directly by email, customers do not need to contact Air Canada Vacations or their travel agent. When you are ready to use your credits, you will need to refer to the information on your invoice, including the Air Canada Vacations reference number.

Please note that we process files in order of departure date. Due to the large number of changes, we work as quickly as possible and appreciate your patience.

New flexible options for future travel credits

Recently, Air Canada Vacations announced even more flexibility for future travel credits. In addition to the changes that have already been announced, including the ability to transfer credits to another person and keep the residual value of a credit resulting from a price difference, credits for future travel will no longer have an expiry date.
