Health tips for a worry-free trip

Travel Tips

We save up to travel. We shop around for the best value. We plan our time off work. We carefully pack our suitcases. We find a dog daycare. We ask a neighbor to pick up our mail. We organize the trip between home and the airport. In short, we try to plan every detail of our trip. But sometimes unpleasant surprises happen: getting sick while traveling. Here are a few tips to help you travel healthy!

First and foremost, remember this: NEVER WITHOUT MY INSURANCE. Never leave the country (or even the province) without making sure you have medical insurance. It's essential!

Before you leave, visit your family doctor, your local community health centre (CLSC), or a travel clinic. These healthcare professionals can help you prepare for your trip and inform you about necessary precautions, such as vaccinations or other medications. Plan ahead, as some travel preparations need to begin a few weeks before your departure.

When traveling, avoid prolonged sun exposure. Remember to use a good quality sunscreen (consult your pharmacist). A hat will protect you from the strongest rays that can lead to heatstroke.

Tropical air, heat, and sunshine often go hand in hand with "A little drink." As we say around here, moderation is key! Avoid diving headfirst into Piña Coladas and Daiquiris... Sugar, alcohol, and heat don't always mix well.

Since our bodies aren't used to this much heat, it's no secret that many travelers find themselves needing to use the restroom more often than at home. Avoid eating too much fruit, as it has a mild laxative effect. Be careful.

Indeed, don't forget to pack a kit including medication for diarrhea, headaches, stomach aches, and nausea.

And one last word: DRINK PLENTY OF WATER (bottled).

Have a good trip!
