Barcelo Maya Tropical

Overall, the Barcelo Maya resort is very beautiful. - Strengths: Everything is accessible both indoors and outdoors. Super close to the beach, the pool, the buffets (Tropical, Colonial), and the beach/pool buffet restaurants. The Premium section is definitely worth it; the service is excellent. There are many (very beautiful) pools. The à la carte restaurants are very good (except perhaps Fuente, which we liked less). We were lucky because there was very little seaweed during our stay (late June), and the sea was beautiful and crystal clear. The pirate ship (and surf) center is cool for kids (note: approximately CAD 35 per person). The Maya Mall and the sports bar are truly wow! - Weaknesses: No possibility of getting coffee outside of the buffet before 9:00 AM. The Tropical lobby bar is much less appealing than the Colonial one (which was closed). Both buffets (Tropical and Colonial) were a bit repetitive. The waiters in the restaurants were friendly, but the rest of the customer service (Premium Service, the girls at the restaurant reception, etc.) was rather impersonal. The hotel is still about an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half from the airport. Be aware of the city tax payable upon arrival at the hotel. Overall, a great hotel; we will definitely return, but probably to the Maya Colonial this time.

De manière générale, le resort Barcelo Maya est très beau.
- Points forts : Tout peut se faire par l'intérieur et l'extérieur. Super proximité avec la plage, la piscine, les buffets (Tropical, Colonial) et les restaurants buffet plage/piscine. La section Premium vaut vraiment la peine, les services sont excellents. Il ya beaucoup de (tres belles) piscines. Les restos a la carte sont super bons (sauf peut etre le Fuente que nous avons moins aimé). Nous avons été chanceux car il y avait tres peu d'algues pendant notre sejour (fin Juin) et la mer était belle et transparente. Le centre bateau pirate (et surf) est cool pour les enfants (attention environ 35CAD par personne). Le Maya mall et le bar de sports sont vraiment wow !
- Points faibles : Pas de possibilité de prendre un café hors buffet avant 9h. Le bar lobby du tropical est beaucoup moins sympa que celui du Colonial (fermé). Les 2 buffets (tropical et colonial) étaient un peu répétitifs. Dans les restaurants les serveurs étaient sympas mais le reste du service à la clientèle (Service Premium, filles a la reception des restaurants, etc) était assez froid. L'hotel est quand meme a 1h15-1h30 de l'aeroport. Attention à la taxe de la ville à payer a l'arrivée à l'hotel.
Globalement Super hotel, nous y retournerons surement mais plutot au Maya Colonial cette fois ci.

Everything within easy reach. Clean beach... the possibility to swim with turtles, fish, barracudas... right on the beach. Wow! Festive atmosphere

The hotel was very good overall. The buffet was repetitive, and the food was lukewarm. I ate better in Holguin in February. There was no grilled meat, poultry, or fish served directly on the griddle. But I ate my fill. It's a very large complex if you include all the hotels in the chain. Very, very clean, including the bathrooms near the pools. There are very nice water features for children with lifeguards. My two biggest disappointments were: 1) the staff, who were rarely friendly, even when given tips, and 2) the beach, which unfortunately is paved with concrete covered with a little sand. There was a lot of sargassum seaweed, but that's not their fault. They do collect it, but it's a never-ending task.

Hôtel très bien en général. Buffet redondant, nourritures tiède. J'ai mieux mangé à Holguin en février. Pas de viandes, volailles ou poisson grillées sur la plaque et servi directement. Mais j'ai mangé à ma faim. Très grand complexe si on inclus tous les hôtels de la chaîne. Très très propre et ce, incluant les salles de bain près des piscines. Très beaux jeux d'eau pour les enfants avec sauveteurs. Mes 2 plus grandes déceptions sont 1) le personnel qui est très peu souriant voire même pas du tout même quand on leur remet du pourboire et 2) la plage qui malheureusement est sur un pavé de béton couvert d'un peu de sable. Beaucoup de sargasse, mais ça ce n'est pas leur faute. Ils en ramassent mais c'est un travail sans fin.

Overall, I enjoyed my vacation: the beautiful sea, the pleasant atmosphere, the friendly staff, the cleanliness of the place, and the wonderful weather. Unfortunately, a few things seriously marred this overall impression. The restaurants and bars were the biggest disappointments. The bars always served the cheapest drinks, and when you asked for something else, the staff seemed annoyed. Even when they complied, they were clearly not pleased. As for the food, it was the biggest letdown of the vacation. The selection was very limited, and many dishes were simply bland. I was particularly surprised by the quality of the seafood, given the hotel's beachfront location. The mussels were frankly awful, the prawns were overcooked and swimming in thick sauces, giving them a rancid taste. Fish was scarce. The only dish I really enjoyed was the local fish, but even the tuna was overcooked. In short, the same dishes were served almost all week, and it felt like they were constantly being reheated and refilled. Even the grilled meat was often dry. I was also very disappointed with the excursions and the tour operator's organization. Instead of relaxation, it was a real source of stress. During the excursion, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., I spent most of the time traveling, waiting for other tourists, or shopping in souvenir shops. I only had a few hours of rest. The communication was deplorable, the organization chaotic, and in a country like Mexico, where everything is unfamiliar and sometimes unsettling for tourists, you appreciate feeling supported and well-organized. I want to mention in particular the transfer arrangements. Upon arrival, I had great difficulty finding my representative; no one seemed willing to help me once the transfer had been paid for. After a long flight from Canada, waiting in the heat and running from one check-in counter to another was very unpleasant. On the return trip, the driver was excellent, but the transfer time hadn't been communicated to me in advance, so I had to organize everything myself. The car arrived well ahead of schedule, which made the day of departure even more stressful. Honestly, I expected a completely different level of service. When you pay for a vacation, you want to relax and enjoy yourself, not spend your time searching for information, worrying, and managing the arrangements yourself. Instead of total relaxation, I ended up with enormous stress. It's a real shame, because this vacation had incredible potential.

Dans l'ensemble, j'ai apprécié mes vacances : la beauté de la mer, l'atmosphère agréable, la gentillesse du personnel, la propreté des lieux et le temps magnifique. Malheureusement, quelques points ont sérieusement gâché cette impression générale.

Les restaurants et les bars ont été les plus grandes déceptions. Les bars servent toujours les boissons les moins chères, et quand on demande autre chose, le personnel semble agacé. Même quand ils accèdent à la demande, ça ne les réjouit visiblement pas.

Quant à la bouffe, c'était la plus grande déception des vacances. Le choix était très limité et de nombreux plats étaient tout simplement insipides. J'ai été particulièrement surpris par la qualité des fruits de mer, compte tenu de la situation de l'hôtel en bord de mer. Les moules étaient franchement mauvaises, les crevettes trop cuites et baignant dans des sauces épaisses, ce qui leur donnait un goût rance. Le poisson était rare. Le seul plat que j'ai vraiment apprécié était le poisson local, mais même le thon était trop cuit. En résumé, les mêmes plats ont été servis presque toute la semaine, et on avait l'impression qu'ils étaient constamment réchauffés et resservis. Même la viande grillée était souvent sèche. J'ai aussi été très déçue par les excursions et l'organisation du voyagiste. Au lieu de détente, c'était une vraie source de stress. Lors de l'excursion, de 7 h à 18 h 30, j'ai passé la majeure partie du temps à voyager, à attendre d'autres touristes ou à magasiner dans des boutiques de souvenirs. J'ai eu seulement quelques heures de repos. La communication était déplorable, l'organisation chaotique, et dans un pays comme le Mexique, où tout est inconnu et parfois déstabilisant pour les touristes, on aime se sentir accompagné et bien organisé.

Je tiens à mentionner en particulier l'organisation des transferts. À mon arrivée, j'ai eu beaucoup de difficulté à trouver mon représentant ; personne ne semblait prêt à m'aider une fois le transfert payé. Après un long vol depuis le Canada, attendre dans la chaleur et courir d'un guichet à l'autre était très désagréable. Au retour, le chauffeur était excellent, mais l'heure du transfert ne m'avait pas été communiquée à l'avance, j'ai donc dû tout organiser moi-même. La voiture est arrivée ben en avance, ce qui a rendu le jour du départ encore stressant.

Honnêtement, je m'attendais à un tout autre niveau de service. Quand on paie pour des vacances, on veut se détendre et profiter, pas passer son temps à chercher des informations, à s'inquiéter et à gérer soi-même l'organisation. Au lieu d'une détente totale, je me suis retrouvée avec un stress énorme.

C'est vraiment dommage, car ces vacances avaient un potentiel incroyable.
