Delighted and charmed

After two trips to Trinidad, I found this offer in Cienfuegos at the Meliá San Carlos. Transportation number 1 takes 1 hour and 20 minutes by taxi from Abel Santa Clara Airport. The hotel is nice, well-renovated, beautiful, clean, and very well located for exploring Cienfuegos. Don't rely on the hotel's breakfasts or coffee. Opt instead for the coffee at José Martí Park and the excellent, inexpensive restaurants in the evening on or near the Prado. The Meliá staff didn't speak French and seemed uninformed about local activities. Bring a beach towel. There's a pool at the neighboring hotel, and the beach is a 20-minute walk away; it costs about US$20 round trip if you haggle. It's useful to exchange US dollars for pesos (approximately 410 to US$1), which is handy for some museums, buying bread or clementines on the street, or paying at restaurants. There's no electricity in the evening, but there's a generator for the hotel, restaurants, and bars. I paid US$100 for a view of the city. Magnificent for photos and a general view of Cuban life. We didn't regret it, but be warned: while quiet in the evening and at night, in the morning at sunrise and throughout the day it's a very noisy and lively street. We will certainly return for the kindness and smiles of the Meliá staff and Cubans in general, and for this incredible and surprising city at every turn.
