Mother-daughter vacation in Tamarindo

A last-minute decision for my 13-year-old daughter and me: a week at the Occidental Tamarindo hotel. Having traveled extensively in the south (Cuban, Mexico, Dominican Republic), I would describe this hotel as different. It's a small hotel, so the buffet is small (very limited choices), there's only one pool, and less entertainment. The rooms are clean, and the grounds are also clean. If you like the beach, the hotel beach isn't suitable for swimming due to too many waves and rocks. You can't really walk there either. However, I enjoyed watching the surfers. We liked being able to walk to the town of Tamarindo (2 km) to eat at a restaurant and visit the shops. It's possible to swim at the town beach. It's large and nice (but it's not the beaches of Cuba...). Overall, I wasn't disappointed, but I wouldn't recommend it either. If I ever go back (maybe to introduce my son to surfing) I will rent an apartment in Tamarindo and eat in town and enjoy the town beach.
Une envie de dernière minute pour ma fille de 13 ans et moi de partir une semaine à l'hotel Occidental Tamarindo. Pour avoir déjà fait de nombreux voyages dans le sud (cube, mexique, république) je qualifierais cet hotel de différent. Un petit hotel, donc petit buffet (très peu de choix), 1 seule piscine et moins d'animation. Les chambres sont propres et le site est propre aussi. Si vous aimez la plage, celle de l'hotel n'est pas baignable par trop de vagues et de roches. Vous ne pourrez par marcher non plus. Cependant, j'ai aimé voir les surfeurs à l'oeuvre. Nous avons aimé le fait de pouvoir aller à la ville de Tamarindo à pied ( 2km) pour aller manger au restaurant et visiter les boutiques. Il est possible de se baigner à la plage de la ville. Elle est grande et belle (mais bon c'est pas les plages de cuba non plus là...) . En gros, je ne suis pas déçue mais je ne le conseille pas non plus. Si j'y retourne un jour ( peut-être pour initier mon fils au surf) je louerai un appartement à Tamarindo et je mangerais en ville et je profiterais de la plage de la ville.

We recommend it… The hotel is a bit dated, but the food and cleanliness were excellent. Keep in mind that the hotel beach is volcanic rock, otherwise it's perfect. We loved the proximity to the town of Tamarindo, the surf lessons, and especially the little howler monkeys (the best time to see them is in front of the fish and cheese restaurant around 4 pm, about 1 km from the hotel). We especially loved Carlos.
Nous recommandons … Hôtel vieillot mais la nourriture et la propreté étaient excellentes. Tenir compte que la plage de l’hôtel est une plage de roche volcanique sinon c’est parfait. Nous avons adoré la proximité de la ville de Tamarindo, les cours de surf et surtout les petits singes hurleurs (pour les voir l’idéal est devant le resto fish and cheese vers 16 h environ 1 km de l’hôtel). Un gros coup de cœur pour Carlos.

The only downside is all the rocks in front of the hotel beach, making swimming impossible at high tide (after about 3 hours) as it's too difficult to cross. There simply aren't any...

This is Costa Rica, so expect big waves on the beach. We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel, its cleanliness, and its comfort. The only downside was the buffet; it's very small, and since there are only two à la carte restaurants, it gets quite repetitive. Luckily, we rented a golf cart and went into town for three days to eat. I recommend this hotel if food isn't a priority for you. The location is perfect for visiting Tamarindo.
C'est le Costa Rica, donc pour la plage vous devez vous attendre à beaucoup de vague. Nous avons été agréablement surpris de l'hôtel, de sa propreté et son confort. Je vous dirais le seul bémol ses le buffet, il est très petit et du fait que nous avons uniquement 2 resto à la carte, ca devient très redondant. Par chance, de notre côté nous avons loué un cart de golf et somme aller en ville 3 jours pour manger. Je recommande cette hôtel si la nourriture pour vous n'est pas une nécessité. L'emplacement est parfait pour se rendre à Tamarindo
