I don't know if you're like me, but when I travel, I love taking photos of the places I visit. However, for the past few years, I've abandoned my camera in favor of my phone. For one thing, it's much easier to carry, and for another, it allows me to instantly share my photos on social media. Over time, I've developed a few tricks for taking great photos and creating beautiful memories. Today, I'm sharing some of my foolproof tips with you!
1. Get to know your device
Smartphones offer a wealth of interesting photography options. Take the time to explore them before you travel. For example, you can adjust the resolution of your photos. This will mean they take up a little more space on your device, but will be of much higher quality. Before you leave, be sure to free up storage space on your device.
2. Have quick access to your device
Install your photo app on your phone's home screen. If you suddenly need to take a picture, accessing the app will be quicker.
3. Clean the lens
Before taking photos, remember to clean your lens. It might seem obvious, but it's easy to forget! When traveling, you carry your smartphone everywhere, so it's normal to find dust and fingerprints on your lens. Just two seconds is all it takes to clean everything. This will save you from unpleasant surprises when you enlarge your photos at home.
4. Take your time
Too often we're disappointed with our photos because they were taken in a rush. Take the time to position yourself correctly in relation to your subject and make sure you find the right angle.
5. Stabilize your phone
Because smartphones are very lightweight, they don't offer much stability when it comes to taking photos. Therefore, it's very important to stabilize yourself by holding your device with both hands.
6. Be careful in the sun
Before taking a photo, check the sun's position. Generally, you photograph with the light behind you to avoid backlighting. Therefore, the worst time of day for taking photos is midday, as the sunlight hits the top of your head, leaving your face in shadow. Conversely, the best times of day are sunrise and sunset.
7. Remember to focus
Do you know how to focus your camera to avoid blurry photos? It's easy! Simply press and hold the desired area on your screen for two seconds to activate autofocus. With an iPhone, you can even lock autofocus by pressing and holding this area. You'll then see "AE/AF Lock" displayed on the screen.
8. Do not use the zoom
Try to use the zoom on your smartphone as little as possible, because unlike a camera, the focus isn't accurate. The definition and quality of the photos may therefore disappoint you. There are zoom lenses on the market that can be attached to your device. Look into it!
9. Beware of the flash
Generally speaking, the flash on a smartphone doesn't produce very good results. Disable the automatic function on your device and get more natural-looking photos.
10. Adjust your photos
Contrast, filter, saturation, cropping… Have fun adjusting your photos with the help of an app like Instagram. Often, a little photo editing will make your images look amazing!
In closing, remember that even though smartphones take much better photos than they did a few years ago, they are still just phones. If you want to take stunning photos while traveling, consider investing in a proper camera!
