If you're like us at Voyages à Rabais, travel is a passion! And if you have a child, you probably want to pass on that passion to them! Here are a few tips if you're thinking of traveling with them.
First and foremost, get him a passport! All children without exception need one to travel abroad, even infants.
Consult the doctor with your child about precautions to take before the trip (vaccinations, medications, etc.). Find out what to do in case of illness on board the plane (earache, stomachache, etc.) and at your destination. At the same time, make sure you have adequate medical insurance coverage for your trip!
When you start planning your vacation, choose a flight time that works for your child's schedule. It's always possible the schedule could change, but it's best to be prepared!
Choose suitable accommodation. Have a baby? Opt for a more relaxed hotel with special facilities for newborns. Club Med is a great example. Some of its resorts are true paradises for young families. Have a toddler? Choose a hotel with water games, calm seas, and childcare so you can enjoy a romantic dinner. Traveling with a teenager? Choose a trendy hotel with arcades, water slides, and Wi-Fi so they can stay connected with their friends on Facebook. ;)
If your baby is a newborn, make sure the airline will accept them on board, as some airlines do not allow infants under two weeks old. Also, check the airline's policies regarding equipment (playpen, stroller, car seat). Children under two years old will travel on a parent's lap and will generally not be entitled to a baggage allowance. However, some airlines allow parents to bring an extra bag for baby's personal items (diapers, bottles, toys, etc.). Ask your travel advisor for more information!
If your child is old enough to understand, prepare them for the trip before you leave. Look at pictures of the hotel, the plane, and the beach. Explain the major differences they will encounter at their destination (language, customs, etc.). The shock will be less for your child if they know a little more about what to expect!
Once you arrive at your destination, request a room with a balcony or terrace so you can enjoy the sun even if your little one is napping. Naturally, request a room further away from the nightclub and the performance venue!
A child can experience stress in an unfamiliar place. Establish a routine similar to the one you have at home so they feel secure.
With that, I wish you a wonderful family trip!
