The perfect itinerary for a day in Malaga, in southern Spain.

I thought I'd seen it all after visiting Barcelona and Madrid, those two must-see destinations on any trip to Spain. Barcelona, with its perfect blend of modernity and tradition, completely charmed me. Madrid, on the other hand, delighted the history buff in me.

Upon arriving on the Costa del Sol (the sun coast), I was amazed by its magnificent beaches and the views of the Mediterranean Sea. It's the perfect place to relax and recharge after partying in Barcelona and Madrid!

I was lucky enough to stay in a superb 4-star hotel complex in Torremolinos, with beautiful outdoor pools, tropical gardens and direct access to Playamar beach.

Although I loved relaxing on the beach, I needed to swap my flip-flops for walking shoes and explore the surrounding area. So I headed towards Malaga, a port city also located on the Costa del Sol, about a twenty-minute drive from where I was staying.

Here are 7 of the places I visited during my day in Malaga:

1. Calle Larios

Calle Larios is considered one of the most elegant streets in Spain. It's a pedestrian street and also the 5th most expensive shopping street in the country. It's the perfect place for a bit of retail therapy. And if you visit Malaga in September, you can catch a fantastic Fashion Week show!

2. Calle Nueva

Calle Nueva (New Street) is another pedestrian street located in the historic center of Malaga. Despite its name, it is one of the oldest streets in the city, opened in 1491!

3. Plaza de la Merced

The Market Square is a central square that beats in the heart of Malaga. It boasts lovely restaurant and café terraces, grocery stores, and a charming artisan market. Exhibitions and events take place throughout the year. And of course, there's a Picasso statue.

4. Picasso Museum

Speaking of Picasso! Did you know that Malaga is the birthplace of the famous painter? A visit to Malaga wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Picasso Museum. Go early on a weekday, as the rooms are rather small and it's often very crowded.

5. Malaga Cathedral

The Cathedral of the Incarnation is one of the major monuments of the Renaissance and it is absolutely magnificent! A must-see.

6. Paseo del parque

The Paseo del Parque (Park Walk) is a must-see when visiting Malaga. A true botanical garden and haven of peace, it makes you forget you're in the middle of the busy city center. Perfect for a romantic stroll, relaxing with a book, or simply admiring the lush vegetation.

7. Alcazaba

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to visit the Alcazaba palace and fortress, but I definitely recommend this place. The architecture of the monuments looks magnificent – you can see the sea and the port, since the Alcazaba is built on a hill overlooking the city!

During a stay in Spain, a stop in this port city is a must! You will be charmed by the beauty of its beaches.
